February, 2012 – Kachinas are more than just souvenirs. The Hopis believe there is a life force in all objects that fill our universe. Those holy spirits are kachinas. Kachinas also refer to the dolls that are given to children to acquaint them with the spirits. Kachinas are also men who wear masks and costumes of their kachina to impersonate the spirits and act as intermediaries between the Hopi and the spirits during ceremonies. In all, there are nearly 400 different kachinas representing animals, plants, nature, and many important spiritual aspects of the Hopi people.
Kachina ceremonies begin in December (Soyal), with the winter solstice calling the sun back from the winter’s sleep. In February (Powamu) celebrates the beginning of the planting season. Finally, (Niman) in mid July celebrates the harvest and the going home of the kachinas until the next season.
